Payarmin and antidepressants: why L-tryptophan is the first line to check
Payarmin and antidepressants have not been tested together. Payarmin is a dietary supplement in liquid drops, and its label lists L-tryptophan, which should not be used without medical advice alongside MAO inhibitors or other serotonin drugs. Ask your prescriber and pharmacist first.

The short answer
Can you take Payarmin with antidepressants?
Ask your prescriber first. No trial tested the drops with an antidepressant, and one label line, L-tryptophan, has a sourced warning.
The label asks anyone with a known medical condition to consult a physician first.
Stopping or changing a dose is for your prescriber to decide, not a reaction to a supplement.
The lines
Which Payarmin ingredients matter with antidepressants?
Four lines go on the list: L-tryptophan, L-tyrosine, the two caffeine sources and ginseng.
Place k in the blend holds at most 200/k mg per 1 ml (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).
| Label line | Most per 1 ml | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|
| L-tryptophan (21st) | about 10 mg | Not for use without medical advice with MAO inhibitors, tramadol or serotonin-raising supplements (L-tryptophan per Drugs.com) |
| L-tyrosine (15th) | about 13 mg | No safety source located; ask about MAOI drugs |
| Guarana (3rd), green tea (7th) | not printed | Caffeine can cause anxiety and jitters (Caffeine: how much is too much? per FDA); guarana may not be safe with other stimulants (Guarana per MSKCC) |
| Ginseng aerial (12th) | about 17 mg | Insomnia is the most common side effect (Asian Ginseng per NCCIH) |
Background
Why is L-tryptophan a special case?
In 1989 an outbreak of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome was linked to manufactured L-tryptophan supplements. More than 1,500 people were affected (Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome per NORD).
Nearly all cases traced to one maker’s products. The label prints no source for its L-tryptophan, so the name goes on your list.
We have no sign linking Payarmin to that outbreak. The point is only that tryptophan is worth naming to your prescriber.

What should you ask before you order Payarmin?
Bring the facts panel and your exact drug name. If you also take 5-HTP or St. John’s wort, say so, since the same source lists both (L-tryptophan per Drugs.com).
More cautions are on the side effects page.

FAQ
Questions people raise about payarmin and antidepressants?
One to start with: Is L-tryptophan in Payarmin the same as 5-HTP? Plus 3 more answered below.
Each answer gives the plain reply first, then the reasoning and a citation where available.
Is L-tryptophan in Payarmin the same as 5-HTP?
No, they are different compounds, but one source warns about using either with serotonin-raising drugs (L-tryptophan per Drugs.com). Payarmin lists L-tryptophan, not 5-HTP.
Does the Payarmin label warn about MAO inhibitors?
No. It gives only a general caution for pregnant or nursing mothers, children under 18 and anyone with a known medical condition. Ask your prescriber.
Could caffeine in Payarmin worsen anxiety or jitters?
It can for sensitive people. FDA lists anxiety, jitters and insomnia among the effects of too much caffeine (Caffeine: how much is too much? per FDA). The label prints no caffeine amount.
Why does the Payarmin label spell L-tryptophan wrong?
It prints L-Typtophan, a misprint, and “Lepidium mevenii” for maca. We type both as printed. A misprint says nothing about safety.
