Normal Blood Sugar Levels Chart: A1C and Fasting Glucose, Explained
Normal blood sugar levels, by the NIDDK chart, are an A1C below 5.7% and a fasting glucose below 100 mg/dL. Prediabetes starts at 5.7% or 100, and diabetes at 6.5% or 126, confirmed by a repeat test. No supplement changes a diagnosis, and no trial has tested Payarmin.

The chart
What does a normal blood sugar levels chart show?
A normal blood sugar levels chart shows three bands: typical, prediabetes and diabetes. Typical is an A1C below 5.7% or a fasting glucose below 100 mg/dL (Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests per NIDDK).
Prediabetes is an A1C of 5.7% to 6.4% or a fasting glucose of 100 to 125 mg/dL. Diabetes starts at 6.5% or 126 mg/dL.
A1C reflects your average glucose over the past few months. Fasting glucose is one sample taken after you have gone without food. Type a result below to see its band.
- TypicalA1C under 5.7%Fasting under 100 mg/dL
- PrediabetesA1C from 5.7 to 6.4%Fasting from 100 to 125 mg/dL
- Diabetes rangeA1C at 6.5% and upFasting at 126 mg/dL and up
Enter either value and the matching band lights up. A single result does not diagnose anything; clinicians repeat the test to confirm.
Cut-offs follow NIDDK (Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests per NIDDK). CDC puts U.S. adults with prediabetes near 115.2 million, many unaware (National Diabetes Statistics Report per CDC). A home meter cannot diagnose.
The same ranges as a table
| Test | Typical | Prediabetes | Diabetes |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1C | Below 5.7% | 5.7% to 6.4% | 6.5% or higher |
| Fasting plasma glucose | Below 100 mg/dL | 100 to 125 mg/dL | 126 mg/dL or higher |
| 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test | Below 140 mg/dL | 140 to 199 mg/dL | 200 mg/dL or higher |
Diagnosis
Does one reading mean you have diabetes?
No. One reading in the diabetes range is a reason for a repeat test, not a verdict. NIDDK says a diagnosis needs confirmation (Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests per NIDDK).
Doctors use an A1C, a fasting glucose or a glucose tolerance test. A home meter can show a trend but cannot diagnose.
Symptoms can include frequent urination, thirst, hunger, unintended weight loss, fatigue, blurry vision and frequent infections (Symptoms of Diabetes per CDC). Many people have none: CDC counts about 11.0 million U.S. adults with undiagnosed diabetes (National Diabetes Statistics Report per CDC).
If you have symptoms, risk factors or a result near a band edge, ask your doctor whether a lab test makes sense. Bring your dates and numbers.
The middle band
What does a prediabetes reading mean?
A prediabetes reading means glucose is higher than typical but below the diabetes range. Weight loss of 5% to 7% and 150 minutes a week of brisk activity can help prevent type 2 diabetes (Prediabetes per CDC).
In the Diabetes Prevention Program, a lifestyle plan cut the risk of type 2 diabetes by 58% against placebo, and by 71% in people 60 and older. Metformin cut it by 31% (Diabetes Prevention Program per NIDDK).
CDC estimates 115.2 million U.S. adults have prediabetes (National Diabetes Statistics Report per CDC).
Lower risk in the DPP lifestyle arm
Compared with placebo in the Diabetes Prevention Program (Diabetes Prevention Program per NIDDK).
The other end
What counts as a low blood sugar reading?
For many people with diabetes, a low blood sugar reading is below 70 mg/dL (Low Blood Glucose per NIDDK).
Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides can cause lows. Signs include shakiness, sweating, hunger, dizziness, confusion and a fast heartbeat.
Treatment is 15 to 20 grams of fast carbohydrate, then a recheck in 15 minutes.
- TremblingShaking hands, a nervous feeling
- Cold sweatClammy skin for no clear reason
- Sudden hungerStrong hunger, maybe queasiness
- LightheadedFoggy thinking or slurred speech
- Racing pulseHeart pounding or beating fast
15-15Under 70 mg/dL counts as low for most people with diabetes. Have 15 to 20 g of fast-acting carbohydrate (juice or glucose tablets, for example), and test again in 15 minutes.
Call 911If someone with a low blood sugar blacks out, has a convulsion or is unable to swallow safely. Do not place food or drink in an unconscious person’s mouth.
Signs and steps are NIDDK's (Low Blood Glucose per NIDDK). Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides are known causes of lows, and supplements can pile on (Vitamins & Supplements per ADA).

Can a supplement move your A1C or fasting glucose?
Evidence that a supplement moves A1C or fasting glucose is thin. NCCIH finds no reliable evidence that any herbal supplement controls diabetes, and the ADA finds none proven (Diabetes and Dietary Supplements per NCCIH) (Vitamins & Supplements per ADA).
The table shows what trials of three ingredients in the Payarmin blend actually found. Doses in trials were far above one 1 ml serving.
The label prints one amount only: 0.7 mcg of chromium.
| Label line | Trial finding | Dose used |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium | Slight drops in fasting glucose and A1C in some people with diabetes, of unclear importance; no change in healthy people (Chromium per NIH ODS) | Up to 1,000 mcg a day |
| Panax ginseng | Fasting glucose about 5.6 mg/dL lower across 16 trials, no significant A1C change (PLoS One 2014 per Shishtar et al.) | About 100 mg to 20 g a day of root |
| Gymnema | A small fasting-glucose drop across 10 small studies (Gymnema monograph per Drugs.com) | 200 to 400 mg a day of extract |
Your numbers
What should you do with your own numbers?
Write each result down with its date and the test name, then bring the list to your next visit.
Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed, and never change it because of a supplement.
- Note the test: A1C, fasting glucose or tolerance test.
- Ask whether a repeat test is due if a result sits near a band edge.
- Tell your clinician about every supplement you add, with the date.

Where do Payarmin and these numbers meet?
They meet only through claims. Payarmin is a dietary supplement, and its label does not mention blood sugar on the front. The sales page does.
If your numbers improve after you start any product, food, weight, activity and medicine may have changed too. Nothing in the label or sales page tests the drops.
See what to expect over 60 days and side effects before you decide.
The label lists 0.7 mcg of chromium and a 200 mg blend of 22 ingredients per 1 ml serving. Trials of single ingredients used larger doses. No trial has tested the product.
A lab test is the only fair judge of your own numbers, and your doctor should read it.

FAQ
What do people ask about blood sugar numbers?
One to start with: What is a normal fasting blood sugar? Plus 4 more answered below.
Each answer gives the plain reply first, then the reasoning and a citation where available.
What is a normal fasting blood sugar?
A normal fasting blood sugar is below 100 mg/dL. NIDDK puts 100 to 125 mg/dL in the prediabetes range and 126 mg/dL or higher in the diabetes range, and a diagnosis needs a confirming test (Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests per NIDDK). A home meter can show a trend but cannot make the diagnosis.
What A1C counts as prediabetes?
An A1C from 5.7% to 6.4% counts as prediabetes (Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests per NIDDK). Below 5.7% is typical and 6.5% or higher is the diabetes range. CDC estimates that 115.2 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, so a result in this band is common (National Diabetes Statistics Report per CDC).
How is diabetes diagnosed?
A clinician diagnoses diabetes with blood tests: an A1C of 6.5% or higher, a fasting glucose of 126 mg/dL or higher, or a 2-hour glucose tolerance result of 200 mg/dL or higher. NIDDK says the result must be confirmed (Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests per NIDDK).
Can a supplement change my A1C?
Not in any way that is reliably shown. Chromium trials found slight drops in people with diabetes of unclear importance (Chromium per NIH ODS), and ginseng trials found no significant A1C change (PLoS One 2014 per Shishtar et al.). NCCIH finds no reliable evidence that a herbal supplement controls diabetes (Diabetes and Dietary Supplements per NCCIH), and no trial has tested Payarmin.
What is a low blood sugar reading?
For many people with diabetes, a reading below 70 mg/dL is low. Signs include shakiness, sweating, hunger, dizziness, confusion and a fast heartbeat (Low Blood Glucose per NIDDK). Treat it with 15 to 20 grams of fast carbohydrate and recheck in 15 minutes. Call 911 for someone who passes out or cannot swallow safely.
