Proprietary Blend Meaning on Payarmin: What the 200 mg Hides

Quick answer

Proprietary blend meaning on Payarmin: the label shows one weight, 200 mg per 1 ml serving, for 22 ingredients together. Federal rules let a blend hide each amount if the ingredients are listed from most to least. So no single amount is printed, but the order sets a ceiling for each one.

The rule

What does a proprietary blend mean on a supplement label?

A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients listed with one total weight instead of one weight each. Under 21 CFR 101.36, the ingredients must be listed in descending order of predominance by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).

On Payarmin the total is 200 mg per 1 ml serving, shared by 22 ingredients. The first-listed has the most, and the last-listed has the least.

Two facts you can use

An even split of 200 mg across 22 ingredients is about 9 mg each per ml. The list is not even, though. The ingredient in place k can hold at most 200 divided by k.

The math

How much of the blend can one Payarmin ingredient hold?

Because the list runs from most to least, the ingredient in place k holds at most 200 divided by k mg per ml. African mango, fourth, is capped near 50 mg.

These are ceilings, not amounts. The real figures could be much lower, and the label does not say.

What it means for you

Why does a hidden blend matter if you take Payarmin?

It means you cannot match a dose in a study to a dose in the bottle. Gymnema trials used 200 to 400 mg of extract a day (Gymnema monograph per Drugs.com), and its ceiling on this label is 25 mg per ml.

It also means you cannot tell how much caffeine the guarana and green tea add. Keep taking any prescribed medicine as directed.

Our ingredient guide sets every place beside its studied dose.

FAQ

Questions people raise about proprietary blend meaning?

One to start with: Can the first ingredient in a blend be nearly all of it? Plus 2 more answered below.

Each answer gives the plain reply first, then the reasoning and a citation where available.

Can the first ingredient in a blend be nearly all of it?

Yes. The first-listed ingredient could hold most of the 200 mg, and the label would look the same. That is why the ceilings are shown as at most, never as exact amounts.

Does a hidden blend mean a hidden drug?

No. A blend only hides amounts, not names. The FDA has found hidden drugs in some supplements, though, so the amounts and a lab report are fair things to ask about (JAMA Netw Open 2018 per Tucker et al.).

Why would a brand choose a blend?

The label does not say. Federal rules allow it (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)), and we have no statement from the brand on why it chose one.
