Evidence check

Is there a supplement to lower blood sugar?

Quick answer

No supplement to lower blood sugar is shown to replace medicine or lifestyle care. NCCIH finds no reliable evidence that any herbal supplement helps control diabetes (Diabetes and Dietary Supplements per NCCIH). Some ingredients showed a small drop in fasting glucose in some trials. Payarmin makes no such claim on its label, and no trial of the product exists.

The short answer

Is there a supplement to lower blood sugar?

Not one you can count on. The ADA says supplements are not shown to improve blood glucose, and some cause lows when mixed with diabetes drugs (Vitamins & Supplements per ADA).

A few ingredients moved fasting glucose a little in some trials. The table shows how little.

The how it works page tests what the sales page says Payarmin does.

The size of the drop

How big are the drops seen in trials?

Small. Across 16 ginseng trials, fasting glucose averaged about 5.6 mg/dL lower, and A1C did not change (PLoS One 2014 per Shishtar et al.).

That is little next to the 100 to 125 mg/dL prediabetes band (Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests per NIDDK).

The risk

What happens when a supplement stacks with a diabetes drug?

Blood sugar can fall too far. Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides can cause lows, and some supplements may add to them (Low Blood Glucose per NIDDK) (Vitamins & Supplements per ADA).

A low means a reading under 70 mg/dL for many people. Signs are shaking, sweating, hunger, dizziness and confusion.

If you feel low

Take 15 to 20 g of fast carbs and recheck in 15 minutes (Low Blood Glucose per NIDDK). Call 911 if someone with a low passes out, has a seizure or cannot safely swallow.

Better evidence

What has better evidence for bringing blood sugar down?

Lifestyle change and prescribed care. A program aiming for 7% weight loss and 150 minutes of exercise a week cut type 2 risk by 58% (Diabetes Prevention Program per NIDDK).

Keep taking every prescribed medicine, and tell your pharmacist about any supplement.

FAQ

Questions people raise about supplement to lower blood sugar?

One to start with: Is a 5.6 mg/dL drop worth paying for? Plus 3 more answered below.

Each answer gives the plain reply first, then the reasoning and a citation where available.

Is a 5.6 mg/dL drop worth paying for?

That is for you and your clinician to weigh. It is small, it came from root trials, and no trial of Payarmin exists (PLoS One 2014 per Shishtar et al.).

Does the ginseng in Payarmin act like the ginseng in trials?

We cannot say. Trials used root at about 100 mg to 20 g a day. The label lists an aerial extract that holds at most about 17 mg per ml.

Should I check my glucose more if I start a new supplement?

If you already test, tell your clinician before you start and log your readings. They can tell you what to watch for.

Can a supplement keep my A1C from rising?

We found no trial showing that. Ginseng trials saw no A1C change (PLoS One 2014 per Shishtar et al.). Food, activity and care have better evidence (Prediabetes per CDC).
